Prevent Automatic Downloads From Internet Download Manager(IDM)

Internet Download Manager is one of the most popular download managers. But recent versions of IDM have some problem(I look at it as a problem) that it starts to download some type of files automatically from the websites. These file types include – EXE ZIP ARJ RAR LZH Z GZ GZIP TAR BIN MP3 M4A WAV RA RAM AAC AIF AVI MPG MPEG QT PLJ ASF MOV RM MP4 WMA WMV MPE MPA R0* R1* A0* A1* TIF TIFF PDF MSI MSU ACE ISO IMG OGG 7Z SEA SIT SITX PPT PPS BZ2. For eg. you open Youtube video and immediately you get the FLV file of the video to download via IDM pop up window. Same thing happened with me when I opened Farmville in Facebook. IDM window popped up to download MP3 file running at the background. The disadvantages of this is that it prevents video streaming as in case of Youtube and the irritating pop up window appears each time even when you don’t want to download anything.

There are two methods to avoid this problem -

Method 1 – Follow these steps -
1) Open IDM
2) Go to Downloads -> Options
3) Click on File Types
4) In text box labeled “Automatically start downloading the following file types, delete the type of files which you don’t want to download automatically.(I completely erased that text box contents)
5) Click on Ok and you are done

Method 2 - Follow these steps -
1) Open IDM
2) Go to Downloads -> Options
3) Click on File Types
4) Click on Edit List button
5) Click on Add and in the Address text box put the address of website from which you don’t want to start the downloads automatically. For eg, for Youtube you can put http://youtube.com/*
6) Click on Ok and you are done

Note – Method 1 prevents download of specific file types which you erase from the specified text box, from all websites whereas Method 2 prevents download of any type of file from the specific website.
